Underground Tunnel Network
An interesting urban legend of Athens, TX is that there is an underground tunnel system directly under the city. The legend is that the tunnels are in the shape of a pentagram and each of the five entrances into the tunnel system are marked by the points of the pentagram, with the courthouse being at the center of the star. However, a more logical approach to the tunnels and their connection with Fuller Park and other suspected entrances are that:
1.) The tunnels were actually part of the “underground railroad” that was used to help liberate the slaves during the American Civil War between 1861-1865.
2.) The tunnels were a means of transporting moonshine during the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920’s-1933.
Whatever reasoning behind the original use of the tunnels was, the fact is that the urban legend surrounds the use of the tunnels during the purchase of the Fuller property to the late 70’s and early 80’s. During this time period the tunnels are rumored to have hosted a variety of ritualistic ceremonies including the sacrifice of small animals and in some cases humans. The local newspaper “The Athens Daily Review” wrote an article in 1989 with written testimony of a personal account regarding the suspected locations of the entrances to the tunnels system. The anonymous person drew a map showcasing the entrances.

I always wondered if the tunnels were a way for folks to get to the courthouse in case of tornados or atomic bombs!

If you really have this info why are you and the others keeping it secret. Where are the tunnel entrances. It seems as though everyone has heard about these things and someone has been there but no one ever gtives an exact location.

I’ve been surfing the ‘net looking at all the info about the tunnels. I find it curious that so many people have seen the tunnel entrances . . . have been in a tunnel . . . know where all the entrances are – - and yet there are NO tunnel photos to be found!
Even if they are cemented over, let’s see some pictures! I’m thinking they are just old entrances to a sewer system.

These tunnels rtun also from the old jail to the courthouse, they were used to transport prisoners to the courthouse and back to jail,
They also were built to be used during the times when nuclear shelters were built, These are te main tunnels, and thier purpose.
Any additional tunnels wee bbuilt after that , God knows for what reason, but they are not a secret and a call to the Henderson county courthouse wouldl probably gain you a lot more knowledge that just hearsay,
I hve heard that the gates to the cemetery atthe park, are ice cold even in the summer, I may take a trip out there and see for myself if there is anything psychic lingering, as I do have quite a psychic ability myself , will postback

yeah where are the pics i hear the someone gave an interview in 1989 in the athens daily review about the tunnels but i havent been able to pull that up yet so if anyone can let me know

I’m a strong believer in the tunnels but i still say that if someone has found them y arent there pics come on people i was born in athens i live ten miles from athens and i have not once seen a tunnel pic

Someone seems like a sourpuss. Negative nancy,you obviously act like you know so much info. Mature up buddy. You have no proof of there not being any tunnels. I’m pretty sure that there are,but they might not be in the form of a pentagram. They could have been used for anything that you could think of. Get the facts,and when you do and if you are right,than go ahead and act like a 4 year old who just won a coloring contest.

everyone here that says they know were the tunnels are likes to say things ,but there is one thing they don’t have is a map ,i found a map of the old under ground tunnels in an old suit case in the barn it is hard to read ,so i took it to an aniliser to find out what is was for ,there is tunnels an there are decoys ,i have the map in a flag case ,i will be making a trip to fuller park in two weeks with a man that was born in 1948 that new of the map an when i told him i found a map on the fuller property he got very nervous ,all the storys about the rail road or moon shine is all storys ,from what i can see from the map it is a toom of some kind ,i will not be taking camera’s or pictures ,i am going to see it with my own eyes an see if it is true ,an hear what this man has to say ,,i don’t know what i will find ,but there is somthing about fuller park that bothers me ,

ok listen ive lived in athens for 14 years , yes thats how old i am but listen closely athens country club has the same brick and so does anothe(hard to explain) and ive also heard that a tur nnel runs to athens country club and also behind arbys
